How to Find a YouTube Keyword Competition Score

  1. Start with the exact keyword โ€” write down the phrase viewers actually type, e.g. how to grow a youtube channel. Long-tail phrases (3+ words) are dramatically easier to rank for than one-word head terms.
  2. Estimate monthly search volume โ€” check YouTube's own search suggestions and autocomplete for the phrase. High-suggest counts mean real demand; zero suggestions usually means zero searches.
  3. Assess the competition โ€” search the phrase on YouTube and note how many videos from established channels target it directly. If the top results are old, low-quality videos, the competition is weak.
  4. Score it with this tool โ€” enter the keyword, its estimated volume, and the competition level above. Scores under 45 are low-difficulty opportunities you can realistically rank for as a growing channel.

A keyword competition score combines search volume, competition level, and long-tail bonus into one 0-100 number: the higher the score, the harder the keyword is to rank for. Target scores under 45, then pair the keyword with a strong title, description, and tags using our other free tools.
